NICE WORK IF YOU CAN GET IT

Cititour.com Review
A frothy delight, the latest incarnation from the Gershwin catalog, Nice Work if You Can Get It, is a splendid use of material from the legendary team of songwriting brothers. Sporting more than ten hit songs, and a book inspired by Oh, Kay! penned by the clever Joe DiPietro (Memphis), the show is filled with laughs. Director-choreographer Kathleen Marshall provides a zippy pace and the twenty-two member cast, headed by Matthew Broderick and Kelli O'Hara (South Pacific), sing and dance with breezy abandon.

Broderick plays a wealthy loveable scamp working his way through wives with names like Roxie, Ginger and Trixie, until he finally falls for Billie (Ms. O'Hara) Bendix, the bootlegger of his dreams. Despite playing the same goodhearted character many times before Broderick's charm is unbeatable. O'Hara knows her way around both a dance floor and a soaring vocal making for an attractive romantic lead. Throw in the nimble Michael McGrath as a loveable gangster/butler, Chris Sullivan as goofball muscle with a heart of gold, Judy Kaye as a woeful temperance supporter, and Estelle Parsons as a combination of Margaret Dumont couture and Eve Arden snap, and you've got a snazzy extravaganza dispensing smiles in every direction.

With Martin Pakledinaz's costumes designed for silliness, and Derek McLane's sets giving off a mansion-on-a-budget feel, the tone here is just right.

Between "Someone to Watch Over Me," "'S Wonderful," "Fascinating Rhythm," and the title song, the comfort level soars and the creative team throws in just the right amount of "undiscovered" gems to make the score feel balanced. True, the song set-ups hang by a thread, but even that fits well with the comic strip sensibility.

This is not a musical for those looking for deeper meanings or important messages. Nice Work if You Can Get It" is a swell combination of thirties' screwball comedies, romantic dance films à la Astaire and Rogers, and a nice smattering of keystone cops thrown in for good measure. There's something to be said for delivering exactly what’s expected and Nice Work if You Can Get It is aces in that department.
