Sherie Rene Scott is so effervescent and charming, so rapturous in her mini bio-musical, Everyday Rapture, that at times you may forget the show only arrived on Broadway after the Roundabout Theatre canceled its previously scheduled revival of Lips Together, Teeth Apart. And while Scott's entry is a decidedly solid Off-Broadway musical (which was part of Second Stage’s lineup last year), it's dwarfed both physically and spiritually in a Broadway house.
Scott and Dick Scanlan (Thoroughly Modern Millie), who collaborated on the book, use her conservative Kansas upbringing (she's half-Mennonite) as a launching pad for her journey of self-discovery. A diva who longs for divinity, Scott lightheartedly struggles to balance her desire to be one with God with her longing for stardom. Her gentle, self-deprecating humor is contagious, and many of her digs are delivered with the most cherubic of smiles, which doesn't lessen their impact, especially when she describes attending the notoriously anti-gay Westboro Baptist Church.
While Scott's silken voice soars through an array of familiar songs, including "You Made Me Love You" (sung to a portrait of Jesus), and a sophisticated medley of Mr. Rogers ditties, the scene-stealing moment is delivered by young Eamon Foley, who reenacts a YouTube video of a young fan lip-synching and dancing wildly to a recording of Scott's voice. But as inviting and well told as Scott’s struggles are, particularly her time in New York during Rumspringa, which left her pregnant, the snippets we're getting leave a person wanting. Everyday Rapture is an appetizing tasting menu, but it still leaves the stomach growling.
