WISHFUL DRINKING

Summary
Carrie Fisher’s one-woman-show, "Wishful Drinking", is funny, funny, funny. How many among us can claim we’ve had our head emblazoned atop a Pez dispenser? Or became teen boys’ fantasy as Princess Leia in Star Wars? Or grew up in Hollywood in a house with three swimming pools? Fisher comes from Hollywood royalty (mother – movie-star, Debbie Reynolds, father – singer, Eddie Fisher) and her life, from childhood (when her father dumped the family to console recently widowed Elizabeth Taylor) to adulthood (where her stormy marriage to pop star Paul Simon and her drug and mental health problems have sold millions of supermarket tabloids) is well documented.

The fact that the show is based upon a book of the same name, and that several other books that Fisher penned about her famous past have been bestsellers, and therefore not too much of this material is new for Broadway is not really a deterrent. Although, at over two hours, the stories perhaps become too much of a good thing. Carrie Fisher never met a punch line she didn’t want to share. Her wry wit and inimitable timing serve her well and her unflinching honesty and self-deprecating humor about the unpleasant aspects her life make for a very entertaining evening.

Make no mistake, "Wishful Drinking" is full out standup including an hysterical lesson plan complete with display board with head shots of the celebrities involved which Fisher uses to try and explain if her daughter, Billie, is in any way related to the guy that Billie’s dating. As Fisher comes to the conclusion, “Only by scandal.”

Despite a pleasant and clever set from Alexander V. Nichols, the theatricality level here is at a minimum – give or take a Star Wars prop or two. Fisher doesn’t relive the sordid details of her past but rather relates it all with the warm fuzzies of your best friend. Your very funny best friend. Your very, very, funny best friend. Did I mention that "Wishful Drinking" is funny? Go. And may the laughs be with you!
