The Grand Central Holiday Fair is grand indeed and tends to be a bit more upscale than some of the other holiday markets around town.

I fell instantly in love with the handcrafted wooden bowls and artifacts made by The Bowlmaker (bowlmakeronline.com). Nathan Favors and his son search out exotic hardwoods for these true works of art produced at their shop in Chalfont, Pennslvania. Prices for some of the larger pieces are in the $200-$300 range.

If you're looking for cards with a little more sparkle make a pit stop at Verrier Handcrafted (verrierboutique.com). All of their cards and prints are made right here in New York City. They come with catchy sayings like "chin up buttercup" and "bling is on." They're also sold at select Papyrus stores.

The Soap and Paper Factory (soapandpaperfactory.com) is a wonderful place to stock up on stocking stuffers. Three piece soap sets are packaged beautifully for $18 each. Scented pure soy candles come in delicious flavors like jasmine, gardenia and violet.

What kid wouldn't love a wonderful handcrafted wooden toy car or rocket in an assortment of glossy colors. Find them at Toytoise (toytoise.com). All of the pieces are made by European and American designers. One hot seller is the Early Rider Spherovelo Ride-on for $99. It's a mini push scooter for toddlers that will make them the envy of any kid on the block.

And what woman wouldn't want a fashionable knit hat from Emma (etsy.com/shop/EmmaNYC). They come in a dazzling array of colors along with scarves, shalls, gloves and hand-warmers. They even sell knitted Christmas ornaments.

Fine jewelry, glass works, children's clothing and lingerie (at Hanky Panky) can also be found at the fair which runs through late December. Because the fair closes before Christmas be sure to ask about the return policy at the individual shops. Most are quite accomodating.
