Japan Week at Grand Central is meant to drum up tourism, but it's also your chance to get your hands on some authentic Japanese street food and other goodies.
The hot seller by far are the Takoyaki balls. While they are referred to as dumplings, they're actually made from a batter that puffs up into round balls as they are rotated with chopsticks on a special grill. Inside you will find a chunk of octopus along with ginger and spring onion. The Takoyaki balls (8 for $8) also get a coating of a special brown sauce, mayo and bonito flakes. It's an interesting bite that bursts in your mouth, similar to a soup dumpling.
Other dishes worth checking out include deep-fried sweet potato on a stick, and cream puffs made on the spot by Beard Papa's.
