Art exhibits come and go at The Metropolitan Museum of Art and at any given time visitors can choose to view from at least four to six different genres. Whether it’s the ancient masterpieces, outlandish punk couture, or photography from the Civil War, New York City’s premiere locale for all things “art” rarely disappoints. However, one talented group of young artists, whose works are available to view now through August 25th, may surprise you. They are New York City’s own… our talented public school children, Pre-K through Grade 12.

The exhibit, which is now in its 11th year, can be found on the ground floor at the Ruth and Harold D. Uris Center for Education. Students in all grade levels created works of various techniques, from tempura and ink, oil pastels and watercolors, to charcoal pencil drawings, mixed media collages and photography.

It’s hard to believe that Self -Portrait, a mixed media collage, was created by a 6th grader! The artist, Breanna Pettway, says “Being an artist gives me the opportunity to create artwork that reflects my imagination.” She credits her art teacher, Mrs. Zapata, at Life Sciences Secondary School in Manhattan, as playing a role in her creative development. A City Street, My Home, by six year old Ashley Hernandez of P. S. 330 in Queens, is another example of what a gifted artist is able to accomplish when nurtured by a supportive art teacher. Ashley says that making art is very special to her.

There are so many more pieces in the exhibit worth seeing. These students really gave it their all, and as a New Yorker, parent, teacher, or visitor to the city, you couldn’t be more proud of them.
