Downtown Brooklyn is undergoing a renaissance. Just one look from the Fulton Street Mall finds new highrise buildings sprouting up in all directions.
While Macy's flagship store (originally Abraham and Straus) dates back to 1883, new shops like H&M, Nordstrom and T-J Maxx are finally catching on, and more stores are expected to follow. The area also boasts a slew of new restaurants including Shake Shack, Hill Country Chicken along with Rocco's Taco's and Tequila Bar.
Some places like Gage & Tollner, New York's original oyster house, has yet to make a comeback. Opened in 1879, the restaurant located inside an old townhouse, closed its doors in 2004. Since then it has served as a TGI Friday's, Arby's and at the time of this writing, a clothing store, although its original gas lamps still remain.
Hopefully, it too will make a comeback.
