Cititour Review:
A taste of Tbilisi in Brooklyn. The Georgian Dream Cafe Bakery is serving authentic Georgian cuisine in a bright, cheerful spot meant to resemble an old world village. The restaurant also has a deck for outdoor dining. But, this is the kind of place you come to for the food.
Start with a plate of sour pickles. We did. In included cucumbers, peppers and whole heads of garlic. In the center of the plate was a mound of pickled flowers called Jonjoli. It is one of the most interesting thing I have eaten all year. We also feasted on a huge salad of tomatoes and cucumber, delicate rolls stuffed with ground beef. There are kebabs. One was a mix of beef and pork wrapped inside a thin flat bread served with a smoky tomato sauce, and a chicken kebab with fresh onion and pomegranate served with a tangy gravy. And we barely put a dent in the menu.
There are Georgian dumplings that we'd like to try (a 30-minute wait) and flattened fried chicken called Tabaka. Another chicken dish - Baje - comes topped with a walnut sauce. Tolma, which resemble grape leaves, are stuffed with ground beef and rice. Chakapuli, a popular Georgian dish, is a stew made with beef or veal and sour green tomatoes. Georgian-style pizzas are available topped with vegetables, as well as Imeruli Khachapuri, a bread made with two types of cheeses.
For dessert, we tried the homemade Napoleons which are excellent and a chocolate walnut cake. Everything we tried was delicious and worthy of many more return visits. Let's hope the neighborhood embraces this Georgian Dream.
