Cititour Review:

Kiku is the little Japanese restaurant that has all of the sudden grown up.  The restaurant moving from its modest Fifth Avenue digs in Park Slope to a much larger and more sophisticated space that once housed the Moroccan spot, Babouche.

A large sake/sushi bar up front is illuminated in red with a large image of a Japanese geisha.  A bamboo divider separates the bar from the rest of the restaurant. Solid wood tables, beige banquettes, slate floors and a crystal chandelier give the space a touch of class.   And watching over the entire room will soon be a giant granite statue of Buddha.  It was still under wraps during our visit.

We started out meal with some crispy calamari rings served with a sweet peanut chili sauce, and rock shrimp atop a bed of paper thin parsnip shavings.  Other appetizers include homemade king crab dumplings and duck spring rolls with sweet potato fries.

Kiku is known for its special rolls like its 5th Avenue Roll filled with king crab, avocado and caviar inside and slices of jumbo shrimp on the outside, or its Dragon Roll with crunchy eel inside and fresh mango outside.  My personal favorite is the crispy soft shell crab roll.  It's got crunch and is full of flavor.  It never disappoints.  Aside from sushi and rolls, the restaurant is also serving dishes like teriyaki chicken, hibachi rib eye, and udon noodles with your choice of chicken, vegetable or beef.  The gentleman at the table next to us seemed more than satisfied with his grilled miso glazed salmon.  You will also find duck served in a spicy garlic oyster sauce.

And while Kiku doesn't serve mixed drinks, you will find a nice assortment of sake to choose from.  Desserts include a chocolate souffle and deep fried ice cream.
