Cititour Review:

I love a good mystery.  I also love sushi.  So when I saw a new restaurant appear on Third Avenue and 72nd Street in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn I was fascinated.  Not because there was a new restaurant ( although they seem to come and go quite frequently on this block), but because the only other hint that a restaurant even existed was a giant carp draped across its windows.  I couldn't help but think this was quite a bold move given these tough economic times, yet here was a restaurant feeling secure enough not to have the rest of the world look in.

But I would recommend opening the door.  We did, and inside we found a charming little restaurant with exposed brick and solid wood tables.  Each table affixed with earthen ware and its own little swimming porcelain carp.  In Japanese, Gyotaku means "fish rubbing" and the owners must be hoping their little bit of serenity will rub off.

The owner, Ming, was the perfect host, taking time out to visit our table and discuss his dishes.  Our waitress was helpful and friendly, coddling our eight-year-old and making us all feel right at home.

Gyotaku doesn't have a liquor license yet, but we were able to bring in our own bottle of saki.  We then proceeded to feast on an assortment of delectable dishes.  First up, soft shell crab ($8) in an excellent marinade, chicken yakatori ($6) served with a sweet and spicy dipping sauce, and rings of calamari ($8) perfectly crisp on the outside and moist and tender on the inside.  We also sampled the seafood ceviche brimming with bits of tuna ($11) in a rich soy dressing, and two house rolls; "Dynamite" ($11) and Red Dragon ($13).  Both were excellent.

So, if you happen to see that carp flying in the window, don't feel standoffish.  We think this spot will rub you in the right way!
