Dos Caminos is exactly what modern Mexican food should be in New York City. The restaurant is fun and hip, accompanied with dim lighting, save the wooden hanging lanterns hung throughout the room. The music is loud and rhythmic and the wait staff, though no one is Mexican, is still very friendly and attentive, keeping to the Mexican tradition.Review By: Rachel Sult
The menu here is large and extensive and full of options, much like any Mexican feast. It’s best to start with a drink, such as a margarita, which Dos Caminos has plenty of Options include frozen prickly pear ($11), seasonal ma0rgaritas like lychee ($12), or the Mexican star ($12). There is an extensive list of beers to choose from, though I prefer to stick to a classic Mexican beer like Pacifico ($6). Of course, sangria is available as well.
Dos Caminos is famous for its guacamole which is made fresh and to your liking. Choose from original, mango, papaya-habanero ($14), jumbo lump crab-chipotle ($18), or try all three in the trio ($18). For some other great Bocaditos, or starters, try the delicious roasted plantain empanadas ($10).
It’s a great idea to come here with a group and try lots of different items, such as ceviche, which is Mexico’s version of sashimi. If just tuna ($12), lobster ($14) or red snapper ($11) can’t strike your fancy, try all three for $16. My favorite Especialidades de la Casa (house specials) is the jumbo sea scallops with delicious coconut rice ($25). I get this dish just for the rice, which has a pineapple sauce and grapefruit. There are so many quesadillas to choose from as well, including veggie or shrimp.
What kind of Mexican restaurant doesn’t have tacos? Dos Caminos surely does, and loads to choose from. However, the asada ($18) is by far the best, and super hot!
For some mas, sides, don’t be hesitant to try the Mexico City street corn; it’s zesty, cheesy, and phenomenal. Finish off your meal with some ice cream. For just $2 a scoop, you can try everything. Flavors like sweet corn and roasted banana are worth it!
Dos Caminos has a lot of fun, flair and flavor. The food is very good and the quality and atmosphere is definitely worth the price.
