The competitiveness of New York City’s cupcake game just got turned up a notch. Sprinkles, a Beverly Hills-based bakery beloved by celebrities, recently opened a location on Lexington Avenue near Bloomingdales, its first in Manhattan (and eleventh nationally). As a bakery devoted entirely to cupcakes, it leaps ahead of the city’s already crowded roster, especially when it comes to variety and complex flavor combinations.

We tried a few daily varieties: the “Black and White” (Belgian dark chocolate cake with creamy vanilla frosting), the “Chocolate Marshmallow” and the “Red Velvet” as well as “Lemon Coconut”, which is only available on Tuesdays and Fridays. All were delicious, though the chocolate marshmallow was filled with a lusciously smooth and ever-so-slightly sweetened filling that was difficult to top, even though the lemony goodness of the vanilla cake finished with fresh coconut flakes ran a close second. The bittersweet chocolate ganache that topped the chocolate marshmallow was also a welcomed reprieve from the heavy sweetness of traditional butter cream.   

Each of Sprinkles fresh, moist cupcakes is generously sized and more than enough for one person, though you’ll probably want to buy at least a half dozen to try a variety. Some more exotic flavors include “Banana”, “Chai Latte”, “Ginger Lemon”, “Mocha”, “Orange”, “Pumpkin” and “Salty Caramel. A handy color-coded chart, which is included with your order, takes the mystery out of which cupcakes are available on each day. Fortunately they also travel well in Sprinkles’ boxes, so feel free to stop by before dashing off to your next birthday bash.

Best of all, Sprinkles works directly with City Harvest to donate any unsold cakes at the end of each day—just one of its many community oriented and sustainable business practices. A portion of proceeds from Sprinkles annual sales are also donated to some very cool charities, such as children’s hospitals, schools, and the Women’s Cancer Research Fund — as if you needed another reason to eat cupcakes.
