Apiary by Andrea Strong

Julie, Kathy and I had dinner at Apiary, named for a bee’s colony or yard, on a dark unusually cold Monday night. Quite honestly, I expected to find the place pretty quiet, but instead it was (excuse the pun) buzzing with all the signs of a more typical West Village hot spot. more

Thanksgiving? Or arriving as a guest? Either way, an especially sweet New York tradition I recently ducked into is ready to help, in the form of killer desserts or a much-appreciated host or hostess gift. Li-Lac Chocolates is celebrating its 85th anniversary this year--helmed by Martha Bond, who's the shop's fourth owner in all that time. more

When you think of a Mamet play, one usually thinks ‘electric’ but the latest revival of “American Buffalo,” the second Mamet play (after “Speed-the-Plow”) in revival this Broadway season, offers more of a fizzle than a full blown lighting rod of explosive power. more

Though I’d love to go, I’ve never been to Vietnam. Friends who have been come home raving about the countryside, the architecture and the food (both street and restaurant food, too.) When I do make it over there, I know this much. I plan on eating my way through the country. While I know I’ll find a lot of food that I’ve never seen or heard of before (and possibly some foods that I will be too freaked out to eat), I do feel like I’ve gotten a good culinary primer on the country’s indigenous eats from one of our city’s best known Vietnamese chefs, Michael “Bao” Huynh. more

Wearing fur is a great idea--for the animals born with it. For the rest of us, there are other much better and kinder options. Excited by a good cause and the prospect of good fashion, my friend Kimberly and I arrived at the Humane Society's 4th-annual Cool Vs. Cruel fashion awards, which rewards the work of fashion-design students across the country who've decided that fur will not be figuring into their design plans. more
