A History of Art from the Streets of New York
by Joann Jovinelly

For the last few weeks, the Donnell Library Building has been illuminated with the works of more than 30 street artists, including John Ahearn, whose plaster casts of New Yorkers date back to the early 1980s. Other works, like those from Ellis Gallagher and Matt Siren, are much more recent. Pantheon does its best to examine and put into context both the nascent work of New York’s street artists alongside pieces by its most recent inductees, though the exhibit barely seems like it scratches the surface of this very popular movement. What is useful, however, is that Pantheon, among other street art exhibits that have emerged over the last five years, has become another cog in the wheel that will continue to position street artists with more traditional gallery artists, further rolling the movement forward and legitimizing the very act of making street art.

Certainly, contemporary street artists have become more outspoken and better understood as a part of our visual culture, a few of them crossing over from anonymity to commercial success in the span of a few years. Part of that success can be attributed to the increased reception and public endorsement of street artists in major art institutions, such as in exhibits like Brooklyn Museum’s Graffiti in 2006, the Museum of Modern Art’s laser-tagging demonstration by Graffiti Research Lab, the Bronx Museum’s Street Life, Street Art, and the Tate Modern’s Street Art show, all in 2008.

What is unique about Pantheon is that it engaged the public with "librarians" and incognito docents during the run of the show in an effort to provide the audience with resources about artists and their work, the risks of vandalism, ambiguities of public property, and the free walls that exist in New York City and elsewhere. Viewers also were invited to participate in a survey about the overall sentiment of the public toward graffiti and street art through an informal ballot that was inspired by Hans Haacke’s 1970 MoMA Poll. Those participatory elements doubled as a forum for an ongoing dialogue about graffiti among the artists who risk arrest to show their work on the streets, and those who appreciate or dismiss it.
