Cititour.com Review
By the time the lights go out on Oh, Hello on Broadway, an hour and 40 minutes after corduroy-clad seniors Gil Faizon and George St. Geegland first take the stage, you may be feeling the metaphorical pangs of “too much tuna.”

For the uninitiated, that’s the name of the public access talk show this weird and wizened pair are known for hosting. It’s a recurring sketch on Comedy Central’s Kroll Show, featuring comedians Nick Kroll and John Mulaney as Faizon and St. Geegland, and they’ve stretched it into a lengthy comedy act — one that serves up as many weary groans as sporadic laughs.

The premise is that they’re performing a Broadway show based on their lives — the pair have been roommates for 40 years — and in it, they’re in danger of losing their Upper West Side apartment when the rent skyrockets. Kroll and Mulaney stretch out what there is of a plot to include the backstory of how Gil and George met, and there’s even a “Too Much Tuna” segment with a guest (School of Rock’s Alex Brightman at the performance I attended) that, ironically, creates a lull from which the show never recovers.

The theater in-jokes are a hoot. Gil and George have cobbled together a set from those of previous shows, including the beauty parlor from Steel Magnolias and family photos from an August Wilson play. In a tribute to Sartre, they’ve replaced an exit sign with a “no exit” sign.

But this is hardly a highbrow affair. Some of the more hilarious moments involve Gil’s risque relationship with a racoon, and Kroll and Mulaney certainly cracked each other up numerous times the night I was there. But their humor might not be the best fit for Broadway. Some of it seems too subtle and New Yorker-y for mass tourist appeal (a Just Salad joke?!).

Oh, Hello on Broadway may be most appreciated by folks who’ve already been introduced to this odd couple. For those just meeting them, it’s an awfully long first date.
