ANYTHING GOES

Summary
The fountain of youth must be located somewhere in the vicinity of the Stephen Sondheim Theatre. That's where the fabulous Sutton Foster is headlining the Roundabout Theatre Company's magically infectious revival of Anything Goes, and looking just as vigorous and effervescent as she did 13 years ago in Thoroughly Modern Millie. Even if the 1934 Cole Porter musical isn’t the sturdiest of ships, director-choreographer Kathleen Marshall manages to keep everything afloat, thanks to an impressive cast that for the most part balances the refinement and the earthiness this slyly silly piece needs.

And what an amalgamation it is. The book, which has been revised to the point that it now has six names attached to it (P.G. Wodehouse, Guy Bolton, Howard Lindsay, Russel Crouse, Timothy Crouse and John Weidman), begins with a love song. Foster, as cabaret star Reno Sweeney, sings the sumptuous "I Get a Kick Out of You" to Billy Crocker, played with perfect finesse by Broadway newcomer Colin Donnell.

But their characters end up with other people on a cruise to Europe, as they encounter Billy's boss (the delightfully droll John McMartin), the object of Billy's affection (sweet-voiced Laura Osnes), her betrothed (Adam Godley, who appears to be channeling the wackiness of John Cleese) and a gangster friend of Reno's (Joel Grey, a bit too understated for all the insanity surrounding him).

Great character moments abound, but it's in the toe-tapping musical numbers that audiences get their money's worth, from peppy duets like "You’re the Top," "It's De-lovely" and "Friendship" to splashy production numbers like "Blow, Gabriel, Blow" and the title tune, led by the indefatigable Foster, who will probably add another Tony to her resume come June. Calling a show terrifically old-fashioned isn't always the highest of compliments, but in this case, it's the top.
