WASHINGTON IN BROOKLYN

Long before she was fixing all the problems in our nation’s capital as Olivia Pope on ABC’s “Scandal”, Kerry Washington came to filmgoers’ attention in her big-screen debut: “Our Song,” an honest, nuanced depiction of female friendship that captures the growing pains of adolescence, as well as the sights, sounds, and feelings of Brooklyn summer. Come see for yourself at Brooklyn Bridge Park at a free screening sponsored by BAM Cinematek. (Thursday, June 22. 8pm. Visit www.brooklynbridgepark.org)

GOING TO THE CHAPEL

Malls aren’t just for shopping any more. “Up Close: Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel,” an immersive exhibition featuring 34 near-life size reproductions of the iconic masters frescos that adorn the Sistine Chapel in Rome, will spend a month at The Oculus at Westfield World Trade Center. Now you can experience the legendary artist’s renowned ceiling frescoes from the Vatican without having to fly thousands of miles! (Friday, June 23 through July 23. Visit www.westfield.com)

HOW SWEDISH IT IS!

At the annual Swedish Midsummer Festival in Battery Park City’s Robert F. Wagner Park, adults and children come together to picnic in the grass, decorate the midsummer pole, make flower wreaths, play traditional games and dance to authentic fiddle music. There will also be food stands offering delicacies from New York's finest Swedish restaurants and food purveyors, including FIKA, Nordic Preserves, Red Rooster Harlem, Smörgas Chef/Crêpes du Nord, Sockerbit Sweet & Swedish, The Shop at Scandinavia House, and Pier A. (Friday, June 23. 5pm-8pm. Visit www.swedenabroad.org)

SING FOR ME

Even though the Metropolitan Opera is on hiatus, that doesn’t mean you have to stay home to hear the work of the world’s greatest composers. One of summertime’s most delightful offerings is SummerStage’s free Metropolitan Opera Recital series, which travels to different parks around the five boroughs. On Saturday, it lands in Queens’ gorgeous Socrates Sculpure Park, where three of the Met’s rising stars, soprano So Young Park, tenor Petr Nekoranec, and baritone Hyung Yun, will perform some of their favorite arias and duets. A little night music, indeed! (Saturday, June 24. 7pm. Visit www.summerstage.org)

BEST OF THE FESTS

For many people, the last Sunday in June is the holiday they most look forward to. Among the many ways to mark Gay Pride Day (in addition to the now beloved parade) is the annual PrideFest street fair, held on Hudson Street between Abingdon Square and West 14th Street. This open-to-all event is not just a way to celebrate freedom, but a great place to find fun activities, worthy vendors, delicious food, and wonderful entertainment for all. How wonderful? This year, country music superstar LeAnn Rimes will be making a special appearance. How can you live without her? (Sunday, June 25. 11am-6pm. Visit www.nycpride.org)
