AND THE BAND PLAYS ON

To many people, the Oscar-winning film director Martin Scorsese is synonymous with tales of gangsters and wolves of (Wall Street). But he also directed what many critics consider the best concert film ever made, The Last Waltz, which documents The Band’s final performance on Thanksgiving Day, 1976. And if seeing these legendary musicians isn’t enough for you, the movie – screening this weekend at the Museum of the Moving Image -- includes appearances by Joni Mitchell, Muddy Waters, Neil Young, and recent Nobel Prize winner Bob Dylan. (Friday, February 17 and Saturday, February 18, 7pm. Visit www.movingimage.us for details.)

HOUSE OF FLOWERS

It may not quite be spring yet, but it will feel like it at The New York Botanical Garden in the Bronx, which is hosting the not-to-be-missed Orchid Show for the 15th straight year. This year, the Garden will pay homage to Thailand, which is home to more than 1,200 native orchid species -- some of which will be found in the gorgeous Enid A. Haupt Conservatory (including a rainbow of vanda orchids, whose large patterned blooms are widely popular in Thai gardens and homes.) Through the show’s nearly two-month run, there will also be Thai dance performances, film screenings, tours, orchid care demonstrations, expert Q&As, and more to delight all of the senses. (Saturday, February 18- Sunday, April 9. Visit www.nybg.org for details.)

OUT OF THE TRUNK

Whether you want to consider it a pure shopping expedition or an educational outing, don’t miss the Black History Month Trunk Show at the Studio Museum’s store in Harlem. This special sale will feature posters and memorabilia from Harlem historian and preservationist John Reddick, who is not only one of the most engaging and knowledgeable purveyors of that neighborhood's history, but who has also spearheaded several of Harlem's recent public space initiatives. Must-have treasures will surely abound. (Friday, February 17-Sunday, February 19. Visit www.studiomuseum.org for details.)

WINTER CAMP

Camping can be one of the great family activities – especially if you’re prepared. So head down to the Brooklyn Children’s Museum this weekend for their special “Dehydration Station” program. There, your kids can take a look at some of artist Tattfoo Tan’s dehydrated food packs, and then get a taste of these treats from the museum’s new mobile kitchen, the Charlie Cart. At the end, you’ll get a guided tour of Wilderness Camp, which consists of four life-size tents, each accompanied with an interactive activity. (Saturday, February 18 and Sunday, February 19. 11am-3pm. Visit www.brooklynkids.org for details.)

SLAP THAT BASS

The irreplaceable bassist Jay Leonhart has been a fixture of the New York music scene for over 40 years, often accompanying some of the greatest singers of our time from Tony Bennett to Queen Latifah. But these days, he’s worth the price of admission on his own, as he combines the skills of an old-school entertainer, virtuoso jazz man, vocalist and composer in just one show. Don’t believe me? Then get thee to Birdland! (Saturday, February 18. 6pm. Visit www.birdlandjazz.com for details.)
