Yes, theater lovers, the long wait is over: the 2018 Tony Award nominations have been announced. And while we won’t know the winners until Sunday, June 10, there is cause for celebration for all the marvelous work that is being recognized.

The coveted Best Musical category was dominated by three well-received shows: the hilarious “Mean Girls,” adapted by first-time Tony nominee Tina Fey from her hit film of the same name, lead the pack with 12 nods (including deserved one actors Taylor Loudermann, Ashley Park and Grey Henson); the inventive “SpongeBob SquarePants”, based on the popular animated series, also received 12 nominations (including a coveted nod for Best Score); and the gorgeous “The Band’s Visit,” first seen last seen at the Atlantic Theater Company, earned an impressive 11 nods, including ones for director David Cromer, writers David Yazbeck and Itamar Moses, and stars Tony Shalhoub and Kartina Lenk. And while the biotuner “Summer: The Donna Summer Musical” didn’t score a high total of nominations; actresses LaChanze and Ariana deBose were rightfully rewarded for their fabulous performances as the late, great singer.

Unsurprisingly, the year’s three musical revivals, “Carousel,” “My Fair Lady,” and “Once on This Island,” racked up a remarkable 29 total nominations. Performers as varied as 18-year-old newcomer Hailey Kilgore, opera singer Renee Fleming, and former Tony winners Jessie Mueller, Norbert Leo Butz and Diana Rigg were remembered for their great turns. As were such tremendous talents as Lauren Ambrose, Alexander Gemignani, Harry Hadden-Patton, Joshua Henry and Lindsay Mendez.

As expected, the Best Play category was dominated by “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child,” which broke all-time Tony records with 10 nominations (including many in the technical categories, along with nods for actors Anthony Boyle, Noma Dumezweni and Jamie Parker). Another record-breaker was the revival of Tony Kushner’s “Angels in America,” which earned an all-time high of 11 nods, including ones for stars Andrew Garfield and Nathan Lane, while the revivals of Eugene O’Neill’s legendary “The Iceman Cometh” (which earned another Best Actor nomination for Tony winner Denzel Washington), Edward Albee’s bracing “Three Tall Women” (which is almost sure to win Glenda Jackson her first-ever Tony) and Tom Stoppard’s brilliant “Travesties” all earned multiple nods.

Congratulations to all the nominees and let the predicting begin!
