Ger is a Yiddish name for Góra Kalwaria, a small town in central Poland known for its vibrant Jewish community – particularly its musical tradition of mandolin virtuosos. Co-commissioned by the POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews in Warsaw in honor of its 10th anniversary and the Ashkenaz Foundation and composed by an acclaimed Polish multi-genre instrumentalist Marcin Masecki, Ger Suite is a moving new work that strives to rediscover a lost musical form that was once a signature sound of Jewish life in Eastern Europe. The US premiere of this new work features the Ger Mandolin Orchestra, an ensemble of world-class mandolinists, directed by renowned instrumentalist Mike Marshal. Presented as part of The Jewish Book Festival.
