India’s Independence Day is August 15th. To celebrate, Kanyakumari located in Union Square (20 East 17 St) will offer a ‘Banana Leaf Special’ with two options – vegetable and non-vegetable selections - for $65 per person, excluding gratuities and taxes. The special comes with a banana leaf spread with three types of rice namely saffron, curry leaf, and coconut (the colors of the Indian national flag); and free flow of appetizers/entrees from the kitchen. Available for dinner for one day only.

Kebab aur Sharab on Manhattan’s Upper West Side (247 West 72nd Street), which traverses the breathtaking and diverse food culture of India courtesy of Executive Chef Dipesh Shinde, will celebrate India’s Independence Day with special marigold-inspired and infused cocktails ($20) and desserts ($15). Marigolds are used extensively throughout India in rituals and as temple offerings. They are also considered a symbol of good luck and love charm.

L’Avenue at Saks is scooping up a Black Forest Sundae that is ideal for a post-work treat or chic mid-shop delight. Chef Stephanie Oliveira’s sundae is available through October. It is composed of house-made Sour Cherry Sorbet, Morello Cherry Puree, Valrhona Chocolate Ice Cream, Crumbled Brownies, and a few Amarena Cherries on top for a nice tart finish. Other offerings include a Saks S’Mores and Coconut Panna Cotta.

Looking for live jazz, head to Cellar Dog. Nestled in the heart of the West Village, Cellar Dog features live jazz performances every night. Or, unwind with classic games--billiards, ping pong, and shuffleboard--that guests can play for $8 per hour per player ($9 on weekends). Cellar Dog also offers tableside games such as checkers, chess, and Jenga for only $2 per player. Guests can enjoy music and camaraderie while sipping on a selection of beers, wines, seltzers, and indulging in casual bites like nachos, pizza, and custom ice cream.

Trivia buffs unite! South Street Seaport Museum is hosting Trivia Aboard the 1885 tall ship Wavetree. Prepare to immerse yourself in an enthralling exploration of the city’s history as you engage in a friendly competition against professional tour guides and devoted trivia aficionados. Visitors will be grouped into teams of 4-to-6 people. Trivia Aboard will be held on Wednesday, August 21, 2024 at 6:30pm. Tickets are $20 and registration is required. Plonts, a new plant-based cheese, is showing up at Court Street Grocers and S&P Lunch. The cheese is made with cultures and enzymes with soy milk replacing cow milk. Eric Finkelstein, Co-founder and Owner of Court Street Grocers said, “It’s got all the savory, rich, sharp and salty flavors we look for,” adding, “We are psyched to be one of the first places to do so.”

Court Street Grocers (485 Court Street) is offering a Veggie Classic Sandwich made with a mushroom and black bean patty, Plonts plant-based cheddar, full sour pickles, vegan mayonnaise, white onion, and romaine on a white bun; while S&P Lunch (174 5th Ave, NYC) is featuring a Classic Grilled Cheese with Plonts plant-based cheddar on white bread.

Gearing up for the Marathon? Or just want a good run? Romer Neighborhood Café is hosting the Hell’s Kitchen Run Club. RRCA-certified run coach, Dani Sturtz, an avid marathoner with a deep passion for running, offers tips on the transformative physical and mental benefits of running. She is also a skilled yoga and pilates instructor, dedicated to helping others achieve their fitness goals.
