The West Village welcomes Carta, a Mediterranean-inspired wine bar and market founded by a trio of longtime friends and hospitality veterans. Located in the heart of the neighborhood, Carta offers more than just wine and tapas—it’s designed as a “third place,” a cozy space outside of home or work where New Yorkers can gather, relax, and enjoy quality food and drink.

At the helm of Carta’s wine program is Wine Director Rebecca Powelson, whose carefully curated list features organic and biodynamic wines from family-owned producers across the Mediterranean. Whether guests are seeking a glass from Greece, France, Italy, Spain, or Portugal, Powelson’s selections are sure to showcase the best of the region’s diverse terroirs and pair beautifully with the bar’s tapas offerings.

The tapas menu, developed by Chef George Guzman, embraces bold Mediterranean flavors with a focus on seasonal ingredients. Guests can start with bites like roasted chickpeas, marinated olives, or a curated selection of cheeses and charcuterie. Highlights include Spanish-inspired classics such as Jamon Serrano, Pan con Tomate, and Gambas al Ajillo, alongside hearty sandwiches like the Burrata, Tomato & Basil on focaccia. For a sweet finish, desserts such as Basque cheesecake and affogatos add a playful touch to the dining experience.

In addition to the wine bar, Carta features a marketplace, "Curated by Carta," where patrons can purchase Mediterranean staples like Spanish saffron, Portuguese sardines, and tangerine marmalade. Many of these premium products are also used in the kitchen, giving diners the opportunity to recreate their favorite dishes at home.

Designed by Anatomy Studio, Carta’s interior is an intimate 30-seat space that blends raw materials like exposed brick, concrete, and stone, creating an elegant yet understated environment. The calming color palette and inviting layout set the tone for both solo diners and groups, embodying the warmth and hospitality of the Mediterranean.

Behind Carta is a team of friends whose bond and shared history in Europe infuse the project with a passion for food, wine, and community. Alongside Powelson and Guzman, founder Marcela Jiménez oversees the business, bringing decades of industry experience to this new West Village destination.

Carta is open Tuesday through Sunday, offering wine tastings and private events in addition to regular service. To learn more, visit CartaWineBar.com or follow them on Instagram @CARTANEWYORK.
