The Coney Island Cyclone hitting a speed bump after the iconic roller coaster suffered a malfunction while making its ascent. Passengers had to be rescued mid-ride due to a crack in the chain sprocket in the motor room, and several people had to be escorted down the tracks, according to NBC News.

A statement on the Luna Park website states:

“The Coney Island Cyclone is temporarily closed due to a mechanical problem that developed on August 22, 2024, and is currently undergoing repairs. We will reopen the Cyclone roller coaster when the repair is complete and the ride passes its DOB inspection.”

The Cyclone made its debut in 1927 and is known as the “Big Momma” of Coney Island. Invented by Harry C. Baker for Jack and Irving Rosenthal, the Cyclone belongs to an increasingly rare group of wood-track coasters. It is capable of reaching speeds of up to 60 miles per hour and is known for its heart-pounding 85-foot drop.

The roller coaster was declared a NYC landmark in 1988 and remains an integral part of Coney Island History.
