If you're still mourning the loss of Ferdinando’s Focacceria—the 121-year-old Carroll Gardens institution that suddenly closed its doors—you're not alone. Known as the city’s oldest Sicilian restaurant, Ferdinando’s was beloved for many things, but none more iconic than its Panelle Special, a humble sesame bun filled with chickpea fritters, fresh ricotta, and a dusting of parmesan. With its closure, a century-old tradition seemed to vanish overnight. But not entirely.

We found ourselves in Bay Ridge at Amuní, where the Panelle Special lives on. Here, it comes hero-style: thick with golden, crispy chickpea fritters and a generous layer of airy ricotta. It’s a bigger, bolder take, but one that still feels rooted in the same Sicilian spirit.

Amuní also dishes out arancini packed with ground beef, peas, and mozzarella; hearty paninis like burrata with mortadella and pistachio pesto; and pizzas that keep the neighborhood fed and comforted.

It’s not Ferdinando’s—but for those craving a taste of what was, it’s a delicious place to start.
