Harlem’s legendary Amy Ruth’s—home to some of the best chicken and waffles in the city—is bringing its Southern comfort downtown. The soul food institution, founded in 1999 by Carl S. Redding in honor of his grandmother, now has a new location near Union Square, giving downtown diners a taste of its beloved homestyle cooking.

Known for its namesake waffles topped with crispy fried chicken (The Rev. Al Sharpton) and smothered turkey wings (The Assemblyman Keith Wright), Amy Ruth’s has been a Harlem staple for decades. Now, its signature dishes—like fall-off-the-bone BBQ ribs, buttery cornbread, and creamy banana pudding— are even easier to get your hands on.

And, of course, no visit to Amy Ruth’s is complete without their famous Barack Obama - fried, smothered, baked or BBQ chicken - that’s as iconic as the former president himself.

The new outpost also means downtown food lovers won’t have to trek uptown for a plate of golden-fried catfish (The Ruby Dee) or a slice of sweet potato pie. With its rich history, hearty portions, and Southern hospitality, Amy Ruth’s Union Square expansion is bound to be a game-changer for NYC’s soul food scene.
