The colorful and flamboyant Mermaid Parade returns to the streets of Coney Island on Saturday, June 22, 2024. The Parade kicks off on West 21st Street and Surf Avenue, travels East to West 4th Street before turning onto the Boardwalk and ending at the Parachute Jump.
The parade draws hundreds of marchers and push-pull floats along with thousands of spectators each year. If you wish to march in the parade, you must register no later than June 18. There will also be an oceanfront ceremony officially opening the Coney Island beaches to swimmers.
The Grand Marshals, or in this case King and Queen, for this year’s parade are King Joe Coleman and Queen Whitney Ward. For over 30 years, the two have been participating in the Mermaid Parade and frequent prize winners for Ward’s over-the-top costume creations, according to Coney Island USA.
Started in 1983 by Dick Zigun, and produced by Coney Island USA, the Mermaid Parade is designed to promote the arts and this one-of-a-kind amusement destination. Afterwards, a stop at Nathan’s Famous for some hot dogs is always in order!
