Mel’s, a new pizzeria by former Del Posto and Daniel Chef Melissa Rodriguez, has opened in the former John Dory space in the Meatpacking District. The New York Times reports it is part of a larger project planned by Jeff Katz and James Kent of Crown Shy and Saga. Look for assorted pizzas cooked in a wood-fired oven.
Diners will discover starters like Focaccia with Sicilian olive oil and roasted garlic; Broccoli Rabe with shallot vin, anchovy, and cured egg yolk; and Giant Clam stuffed with shrimp, breadcrumbs and oregano. Pizzas include the Margherita with tomato and buffalo mozzarella; Soppressata Picante with tomato, mozzarella and oregano; and Frutti di Mare with octopus, squid, shrimp, tomato, chilis, and basil. From the grill comes a New York Strip, Whole market Fish and Whole Roasted Cauliflower. For dessert, there are gelato sundaes.
The restaurant was drawing a nice crowd the night we stopped by for a look-see.
Mel’s is located at 85 10th Ave at 16th St, New York, NY (212) 970-2202
