It’s not too often you find a restaurant that can put a smile on your face. Mr. Capri, which recently opened on West 8th Street, does just that from its delightful staff to its sunny menu. The aqua blue door provides a hint of what awaits inside.
Mr. Capri, as the name suggests, draws inspiration from one of the most beautiful places on earth, the famed Isle of Capri off the coast of Naples. The restaurant is awash with white-washed brick and wooden planks that line the ceiling. A white, L-shaped bar is surrounded by sunny lemon yellow stools. On the walls are images of life in Capri with lively Italian music to match.
Light, summery flavors abound like Insalata Del Gozzo, a salad of watermelon, arugula, mint, ricotta fresca and watermelon-balsamic vinaigrette. Pastas bring Ravioli Caprisi, house-made ravioli with caciota cheese, and marjoram topped with tomato-basil sauce; Liguine Alle Tre Vongole sporting three types of clams, peperoncino and shaved fennel drenched in a white wine sauce; and Tagliatelle with a Capri-style rabbit ragout. Oven roasted sea bream; grilled ribeye with potato gateaux and broccoli rabe; and classic breaded chicken cutlet with eggplant parmigiana round out the menu.
Signature cocktails keep the island theme going. Sea blue Grotto Azzurra offers a mix tequila, blue carucao, Tio Pepe and fresh lime juice (sweet and potent); Villa Malaparte with mezcal, beet juice, Creme de Cassis, lemon juice and spicy bitters; and Montesolaro made with Agrippa Riserva, Amaretto de Saronno, orange bitters and orgeat syrup. The drink is garnished with a strand of black licorice.
Mr. Capri is offering New Yorkers a loving embrace. They should accept it! - T.R.
