He's the MTA's public enemy No. 1. The man we've dubbed Mustachio leaving his mark on subway posters from Brooklyn to Manhattan and costing the MTA thousands upon thousands of dollars.

They've been spotted on Carroll Street in Brooklyn on the F Line and 49th Street in Manhattan on the R Line and pretty much every line in between. A modern day Zorro leaving his mark across the city. Yes, it's Mustachio. One blogger even claims to have interviewed the elusive Moustachio who leaves his mark on crowded subway stations.

He actually calls himself the Mustache Man and tells the blog Impudent Ways:

"I write 'moustache' where moustaches should go on posters, mostly in
the subway, but also on the street, on buses. If there's an ad that
needs a moustache, I'm there
."

Mustachio has been leaving his tag now for more than a year now. And the city seems helpless to stop him, or is simply allowing it. Not everyone is laughing, especially if you're shelling out big bucks on a subway ad.

So is this street art or an act of vandalism? Take our poll.

UPDATE: The Mustache bandit has been captured. According to the Daily News, Joseph Patrick Waldo, 26, was busted after admitting leaving his curly mustache tag at the Third Avenue L train station. He faces charges of criminal mischief and graffiti. 6/26/11
