Marc Forgione, chef and owner of Peasant is branching out with Peasant Wine Bar, also located on Elizabeth in LoLiTa. The new candle-lit space once served as Peasant’s wine celler. The new space reimagines rustic enoteca, of Italian wine library featuring wines from each of Italy’s regions including lesser-known indigenous varieties that are often identified as ‘peasant’ grapes. The wine list is curated by Beverage Director Scott Woltz, previously at Babbo, Eleven Madison Park, and Quality Branded.
Chef Forgione’s accompanying menu relies on rustic, wood-fired Italian cooking. It is designed to complement the wine selections with housemade charcuterie and ancient grain sourdoughs. Other dishes include Pate di Campagnola, a pig’s head terrine with accompaniments; Wood-fired Lingua with horseradish and salsa verde; and Oxtail with bone marrow and mostarda. There are also some favorites from Peasant’s menu as well, including Di Palo’s Burrata with mushroom marinara and truffle balsamic; Calamari with Judith Point squid and pepperoncini; and pastas like the Gnudi Cacio e Pepe with broccoli rabe pesto and smoked pecorino. For dessert, there is Nutella Budino with mascarpone whipped cream and Affogato with fior di latte gelato (and shot options like Anisette and Sambuca) to round out the menu.
To enter, guests travel down stone stairs and through a heavy barn door where they are transported away from the city and into an intimate 35-seat cellar fitted with wood-lined walls, stone columns and decades-old wooden tables. A stone bar sits adjacent to the wine vault.
Peasant Wine Bar is located at 194 Elizabeth St, New York, NY.
