After getting its start as a pop-up, people are lining up at Pecking House, known for its Asian-style chicken and now a lot more. When we arrived at Pecking House’s first brick-and-mortar location, on Flatbush Avenue near St Mark’s Place in Prospect Heights, there was already a line forming out the door.

Started by Chef Eric Huang, who grew up in his family’s restaurant in Queens and trained in Michelin-starred restaurants such as Café Boulud, Gramercy Tavern and Eleven Madison Park, Pecking house has now morphed into a full-scale eatery. His partner, Chef Maya Sulit Ferrante, gave up a job in finance to pursue a dream of cooking at the Institute of Culinary Education. Along the way, the two developed a cult following. And with good reason – the food is fabulous!

Diners order upon entering the restaurant and have the food delivered to their table. A 2-piece ($18) and 3-piece ($27) chicken meal are offered with one or two seasonal sides. Diners can choose from the naked or signature chili chicken with a mix of white or dark meat. The chicken has a nice crunchy crust with hints of star anise and other Asian spices. It comes with a choice of three sauces – Green Garlic Ranch, PH-resno Sauce, or “Alabama White” Truffle Sauce. A cauliflower substitute for chicken is also available

Visitors will also discover things like Orange Pepper Wet Wings ($13), Pineapple Crispy Chicken Sandwich with pineapple jam, Oyster Mushroom Po’boy, and “Sloppy Po” with spicy Ma Po tofu. Sides are also worth seeking out, especially the mashed potatoes with duck heart gravy and dirty fried rice with crunchy bits. Both are highly addictive. Drinks, from the Wandering Barman, come in small glass flasks with names like Iron Lady Sling, Miss Casanova Daquiri and a Swipe Right Old Fashioned. There’s also a nice selection of craft beers and ciders.

Pecking House is located just a few blocks away from Barclays Center. Judging by the crowds, including young families, the restaurant is already a smash hit!
