Starting November 15, New Yorkers will have a rare opportunity to experience 850 years of history at the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine with Notre-Dame de Paris: The Augmented Exhibition. Using state-of-the-art augmented reality, this immersive showcase transports visitors through centuries of the iconic Parisian cathedral’s history, from its medieval origins to its modern-day restoration.
This ambitious exhibition, produced by French ed-tech startup Histovery, in collaboration with the organization overseeing Notre-Dame’s restoration, arrives as the cathedral prepares to officially reopen in Paris on December 8, 2024, after five years of intensive reconstruction. Through the use of HistoPad™ tablets, guests can virtually witness pivotal moments in Notre-Dame’s timeline, including the construction of the Gothic choir in 1180, Saint Louis' arrival with the Holy Crown in 1241, and the resilient structure’s survival of the 2019 fire.
Visitors navigate through time with high-resolution visuals, 3-D models, and in-depth stories about Notre-Dame’s past and present. In one of the exhibit’s highlights, guests can observe the intricate efforts of current-day craftsmen dedicated to the cathedral’s restoration—a remarkable tribute to both history and craft.
And thanks to the sponsorship of L’Oréal Groupe, Notre-Dame de Paris: The Augmented Exhibition merges centuries-old architecture with cutting-edge multimedia, bringing to life the beloved French landmark for art, history, and tech enthusiasts alike. "This exhibition bridges two resilient cathedrals, inviting us to relive history in a vibrant way,” says the Very Reverend Patrick Malloy, Dean of St. John the Divine.
Open through January 31, 2025, this exhibit promises to be a cultural highlight of the season, bringing Notre-Dame’s legacy to New York’s doorstep.
