Midtown East now has a fabulous new French spot to call home. Sebastien Auvet, the force behind the popular Vin Sur Vingt wine bars, has opened his first full-scale French Bistro.

Vin Sur Vingt Bistro à Vins is located at 230 East 51st Street where French bistro Bateau Ivre once stood. Auvet has fond memories of Bateau Ivre. He worked there as the General Manager many years ago. It’s also the spot where he, and his favorite customer (now business partner) came up with the idea for the Vin Sur Vingt wine bars. It’s a fun “full circle moment” for the two and marks the arrival of their 6th NYC location and first restaurant.

The menu is chock full of French bistro classics, including some recipes directly from Auvet’s grandmother. There's a wonderful Frisee aux Lardons with crispy goat cheese, bacon and champagne vinaigrette; French Onion Soup with caramelized onions, bread and gruyere gratinee; Escargot smothered in garlic and parsley butter; Steak Tartare au Couteau made with hand-cut filet mignon, Cote de Boeuf for two, Roast Chicken, and Tarte Flambée, an Alsatian-style pizza with crème fraiche, onions and lardons.

Paté and Terrines by Aurelien Dufour are also available along with traditional desserts like a Paris Brest with hazelnut cream, Chocolate Mousse, and Tarte Tatin with organic apples and ice cream.

In keeping with the Vin Sur Vingt wine bars, there are at least 35 excellent wines by the glass nightly, with more specials. All are priced very well. The mark up is purposely less than most restaurants and bars to give diners the chance to experiment and try lots of wine, affordably.

Vin Sur Vingt Bistro à Vins is open nightly for dinner, until midnight during the week and until 2am Friday and Saturday nights. There is also a late night happy hour (25% off any bottle of wine) from 10pm to close.
