Una Pizza Napoletana

Pizzamaster: Anthony Mangieri was born in New Jersey, but made a name for himself in San Francisco before returing to the East Coast.

Style: Neapolitan pizza

Oven: Wood-fired brick oven

Crust: Naturally leavened with a thick outer crust and some bubbly charred spots.

Basics: San Marzano tomatoes, buffalo mozzarella, extra virgin olive oil, fresh basil, garlic, sea salt.

Pies: Marinara, Margherita, Bianca, Filetti (cherry tomatoes), Ilaria (smoked mozzarella, arugula), and Apollonia (fresh eggs, salami - Sundays only)

Size: 12 inch pies (no slices)

Price: $25

Other Dishes: Beef Carpaccio with pistachios and parmesan, ‘nduja with white turnips, and chilled white asparagus. Strawberry panna cotta for dessert.

Location: 175 Orchard St, Lower East Side

Space: Carrara marble bar, tile on floors & walls, natural wood counters and tables

Vibe: Good for couples and small groups, upscale, some people eating their pizzas with knife and fork (really?)

Joe & Pat’s Pizzeria

Pizzamasters: Family run by relatives of Joe (Giuseppe) and Pat (Pasquale) Pappalardo. The two started their first restaurant on Staten Island in 1960.

Style: Thin Crust Pizza

Oven: Gas-fired stainless steel oven

Crust: Ultra-thin, almost cracker-like crust that snaps when you bite into it

Basics: Bright tomato sauce, fresh mozzarella, basil, garlic, extra virgin olive oil

Pies: The 1960 Original (tomato and mozzarella), Vodka, Margherita, Sausage & Broccoli Rabe, Shrimp Scampi, White Clam and Tri-Pie (tomato, pesto and vodka sauce

Size: 10 inch & 16 inch (no slices)

Price: $13-$30

Other Dishes: Salads, rice balls, beef braciole, baked clams, fried calamari, scungilli, zuppa di mussels, pasta fagioli, Nonna’s lasagna, tortellini alfredo, eggplant rollatini, shrimp parm, skirt steak and more…
