The Battle of the Mint Juleps

Ahead of the Kentucky Derby, some popular night spots have their own race going on. Here's their take on the Mint Julep and recipes.

The Bitter Secretariat at Beauty & Essex

4 Mint Leaves (torn)
1.5 oz Michter’s Bourbon
.25 oz Fernet Branca
2 oz Thomaso’s Sour
Top with Ginger Beer

Muddle mint in glass. Add bourbon, Fernet, sour mix and ice. Stir, and then strain into a highball filled with crushed ice. Top with ginger beer.


Jamaican Julep at The Third Man



1.75 Jamaican Rum (Appleton 12)
.75 Cynar
.25 Cane Syrup
2 Dashes Angostura bitters
Handful Mint

Add all ingredients to a glass, lightly muddle, add crushed ice and stir.
Top with overflowing crushed ice and garnish with large mint sprig.


Luca Mano-Freddo at L’Apicio



2.25 oz Dill-infused Vodka
.75 oz Velvet Falernnum
.75oz. Lime
Cucumber, 6 small pieces
5 pieces of Mint, plus 1 for garnish

Muddle mint and cucumber with Velvet Falernnum in a julep cup. Add ice, top with vodka and lime and stir. Garnish with sprig of mint and wedge of cucumber.
