Description:
The LABA Theatre at the 14th Street Y is emerging as a modern, professional, and convertible black box theater where experimental and commercial theatre performing arts, the reimagination of Jewish culture, and the many faces of a vibrant community center in the East Village meet. Designed by LABA artists-in-residence, and led by multi-media artist David Tirosh, over 2.5 years of study and dialog on the role of art and culture in our community, the theater will feature a fully moveable and retractable seating system, new wood floor, and state-of-the-art lighting and audio technology, supported by a professional staff. The LABA Theatre is designed to serve as a premier downtown venue for dance, theater, and music, as well as a hub for the artistic community of the 14th Street Y and the creative expression of the Y's core programs for children, families, and the community as a whole. Through the theatre, the Y is daring itself to reimagine the shape, function, and aesthetic of Jewish communal space and vision within a neighborhood at the heart of cultural innovation for New York City and the world.   - KEK 11/27/10
