Street-level shopping, designed to entice the curious, does just that as it invites guests to experience the store with their every sense: in blasts of color, distant fragrances, the sound of pleasant music, the touch of luxury fabrics and upholstery, and the taste of locally sourced organic food in ABC Kitchen, a fine dining restaurant located below the mezzanine.
Considered by many a pioneer in Manhattan’s crowded pantheon of eco-chic retailers, ABC Carpet & Home CEO/Creative Director Paulette Cole has created one of New York City’s most treasured destinations for sourcing imported furnishings, carpets, unusual accent pieces, and eclectic antiques.
First-time visitors to the Broadway showroom should spend ample time on the first floor where they’ll find no shortage of gift-worthy extravagances including one-of-a-kind estate jewelry, vintage rings and pendants, South Asian apparel, personal accessories, and a gallery of Tibetan arts and crafts. Hundreds of individual store displays, each remarkable on their own, help customers navigate the jam-packed cornucopia of imported wares from handmade ceramic art pieces and glassware, to unusual light fixtures and oversized pillows. A short walk to the rear of the showroom reveals stairs that lead to the mezzanine, which welcomes you into a gallery of children’s furnishings and nursery items. Vintage iron cribs, antique wooden spool beds, and tiny-sized desks and chairs hold court for thousands of hand-knitted sweaters and booties, classic wooden toys and picture books, stuffed animals of every ilk, and plenty more to decorate and inspire any child’s fantasy.
Those shopping for furnishings, carpets, lighting, bedding, or accessories can do so on each of ABC’s specialty floors. Second-floor customers can expect items for home and office, including industrialized vintage shelving, desks, and storage components, as well as individual galleries for Calvin Klein, Herman Miller, Kartell, and Las Venus. The second floor is also home to the ABC Interior Design Studio, where complimentary personalized shopping services are available. The third floor contains furnishings for the bedroom and bath, including a full selection of down comforters, Italian sheet sets, and organic bath linens. Assorted toiletries from the first-floor Apothecary punctuate the relaxing landscape of soft blue and green hues. The fourth floor, which upon a quick glance seems like an elaborate den of masculinity, hosts a variety of casual and economical furniture and lighting from designers such as Timothy Oulton, Gus*, Reeves, and Cobble Hill. The rich leathers and interesting storage options compliment one another nicely, as does the edgy décor of riding saddles, boots, and tables made from stacking vintage suitcases. Floor five continues its play on the eclectic with a nice collection of vintage and modern mirrors, antiques for bedrooms and dining rooms, and galleries highlighting designs by Barbara Barry, Ralph Lauren, and Theodore Alexander. The sixth floor (and adjacent store across the street) specializes in rare and collectible oriental rugs.
Although the prices at ABC Carpet & Home can be steep, feel free to ask for special reductions. It’s also a great place to come in search of ideas, or for that one over-the-top conversation starter for any room. Shoppers in search of well-crafted gift or baby items will not be disappointed either, as the selection on the first floor carries something unique for any budget. Those truly seeking sale prices should check out ABC’s lower level, which is home to a Conran Shop. We love the collection of practical basement bargains, including 100 percent cotton woven striped floor pillows from $18, colorfully painted wooden bentwood chairs, $150, and a set of old-fashioned cereal/dessert bowls, $16.
