Neighborhood: Greenwich Village
Type of Place: Jazz Clubs

Description:
Once in a while we could all use a night out at that kind of place where everybody knows our name. Arthur’s Tavern, an old time favorite jazz and blues bar in the West Village , is just that sort of spot. I guess that’s why after decades of packing people into this small space to hear live music, they don’t show any signs of slowing down yet.
On the Saturday night we visited, an eclectic mix of people, young and old, filled the seats. Flags from around the globe lined the back wall of the bar. A friendly bartender attentively refilled drinks if they were low, and even though they have a two drink minimum per set, she didn’t make us feel rushed to drink up and order another round. Yes the place is ancient. Yes it smells a bit musty. But Arthur’s Tavern is a comfortable and inviting place to kick back, enjoy live jazz and blues free of charge, and just relax.
I can’t say after my one and only visit that anyone knew my name, but the vibe at this West Village institution made me really glad I came. Cheers! - Andrea Muller
