You have to be pretty darn cool to pull off the looks that SoHo store Bess has to offer. The rocker shop is dark and edgy, full of skulls and studs on clothing that looks like it hasn’t been washed in a decade. The hip store is your one stop solution if you are angling to fit in at a dive bar with the skinny jean and tattered tee wearing East Village crowd.
If this sounds like your cup of tea, then the handcrafted clothing’s hefty price tag will be justifiable. If not, well then you may have a problem dropping $80 on the Bess NYC Angels cut off tee shirt, which is heavenly soft and thin but stained and ripped to the max. Footwear seems to be among Bess’ most popular item. Roughed up and steal studded Doc Martens, Vans, and Converse sneakers are ample around the store, and pretty awesome, but the weapon-like shoes will run you between $180-$220. The Bleach Out Corroded Jeans (sounds attractive, doesn’t it?) are a cheaper $190 and are similarly studded, just as are the Leather Jackets (that will run you well over $1,000), Corroded and Bleached Denim Jackets ($340), and the sweet Black Decay Duffle Bags ($240).
Bess NYC is definitely worth a visit next time you’re in the SoHo area, if not to pick up a pair of Converse covered in spikes, then to catch a glimpse of a genuine downtown store geared toward grungy and cool East Village rockers.
