Men, men, men, men….head to Blue in Green to update your wardrobe with the hippest raw denim which, yes, is still en vogue. I’ve been to BiG about five times, obviously not shopping for myself, but for my little brother or in search of a gift for a male friend of mine who is sick over this place.
Surrounded by an all-Japanese sales staff and a massive number of Japanese brands in a floor space that can fit about 7 people before it starts to feel over-populated, you may feel like you actually are in Asia. This may be a pro or a con for you, I don’t know, but the upshot is you will not only land some major threads that you probably cannot find anywhere else in New York, you’ll also receive a crash-course in Japanese denim at the same time.
The stock here (they carry more than jeans, by the way) is as you can guess, pricey. Expect to spend no less than around $250 for a pair of pants (even sweats are expensive, like their Samurai brand Loopwheels for $250, with a $265 hoodie to match). For kicks, try on a few pieces of their budget-busting outerwear like The Real McCoy’s Leather Jacket (made of horsehide, $2,680) or toy around with a BUCO wallet made of Cordovan leather for $638 (or replace it with your own wallet, if it's stuffed with that kind of green!)
When it comes down to it however, Blue in Green really is all about the jeans, and you’ll be over-the-moon about the quality flaunted here. Say sayonara to Deisel, Lucky and Gap, and prepare yourself for the real, raw deal with brands like Momotaro, Pure Blue Japan, Eternal and Oni. And don’t be shy about this foreign territory either, the sales people are abnormally patient - a perk for folks who need to try on dozens of pairs before the BiG decision. Plus, they will measure you for hemming and even perform the tailoring for you that same day. And, drum roll please….all repairs after your purchase of jeans are FREE FOR LIFE!
Although I have not bought a pair of jeans at Blue in Green, I have given my brother gift certificates from the store on a few occasions, and that time I visited with my denim-crazed male friend who is way more of a fashionista than I am, I bought him a cool Real McCoy striped thermal ($135) to go along with the Samurai denims he bought for around $300.
