The Brotherhood Synagogue was founded in 1954 by Rabbi Irving J. Block z”l in order to make religious brotherhood a living reality. In 1975, the congregation acquired and restored the historic former Friends Meeting House situated on the beautiful and serene Gramercy Park in New York City. Services at The Brotherhood Synagogue encourage congregational involvement and the equal participation of men and women. An Oneg Shabbat or Kiddush follows services, offering a friendly setting to meet others of all ages. Our doors are always open to the community for those who wish to pray. What makes us unique is our longstanding and unwavering commitment to outreach. Our participation in the community extends to people of other faiths or without religious affiliation, those requiring special education, and to New York City’s inhabitants who are most in need. Individuals and families are invited to join The Brotherhood Synagogue and to take an active role in our community. Special membership rates exist for young adults and financial scholarships are available. The Brotherhood Synagogue’s diverse program of activities offers our community a way to sanctify their lives through a commitment to our Jewish heritage and social action.
