It is one of New York's most elusive parks and one that showcases the city's urban past in all of of its glorious gritiness. Getting inside Brooklyn Terminal Park itself can be a task. More on that in a moment.
First, to what you will find inside. There is a large jetty with path that takes you deep into the harbor and in close proximity of ships steaming into port. The views of Manhattan are also spectacular with the Statue of Liberty directly ahead and to the right an amazing view of lower Manhattan and the Freedom Tower. There is a bike path and walking trails that takes you past marshy areas where we spotted egrets and ducks. Deeper inside is a small forest at the river's edge. Parts of the park are preserved as natural spaces and off limits to visitors. The park also features a huge soccer field and areas for baseball.
Now to getting there. The entrance is at the corner of 43rd Street and First Avenue in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. Enter the Bush terminal complex and a small green sign directs you to a winding path. The entrance to the park is about a block in and also has a small parking lot. It is truly an adventure. A hidden gem in a city full of wonders.
