Description:
I ducked into Colette Fashions simply because I liked what I saw in the window; but inside, I discovered not only charming clothes but very welcome news: For the next few weeks, all stock, with the exception of the shoes, is 50% off. Since the shop's regular prices are already reasonable, this means great deals. I bopped around to the indie rock on the sound system, watched customer after customer light up when hearing of the sale ("Did you say '50%'?" one asked. "Are you sure it's not '15'?"), and dug happily into the racks.

As cute as they are practical, the clothes here can easily go from a "creative office" setting to after-work drinks to a full-on party. Some of what I loved: a short-sleeve top, gathered and fitted, in black or plum, from Mustard Seed, now $27; a midnight-blue work (or cocktail!) dress with puff sleeves from Song of Love, now $41; an extremely cute fitted cotton sweater, in pumpkin or black, from Lulumari, with a cluster of buttons on front, now $39; a cable-knit dress in gold or black from Crystal Candy, now $39; a roomy sweater dress in green or gold from Flying Tomato, now $36, also with clever front-button detail; a baby-doll jacket in navy or ivory brocade, with a detachable lace collar and lace hem, from Hot and Delicious, now $52; also from H&D, a light jacket in gold with a tie waist that could easily double as a stylish cold-weather dress, now $58; and a sheer blouse from Esley, in rose or brown silk/cotton, with sweet tie sleeves, now $37.

I will certainly be coming back here to shop for clothes. But on this visit, I bought a pair of amber lucite earrings (now $4!) and two patterned lucite bangles (now $7 each) before heading out into a rainy Saturday that didn't dampen my shopper's enthusiasm. Enjoy.   - Pamela Grossman; Nov 10, 2008
