Neighborhood: Coney Island
Type of Place: Beaches

Description:
Coney Island is world famous. It offers 2-1/2 miles of surf and sand, as well as a boardwalk with amusements including the Cyclone roller coaster and Wonder Wheel. It's also home to Nathan's famous hot dogs. Coney Island beaches are among the widest in the city, although we find the sand to be a little gritty. Annual events include the Mermaid Parade in June and the July 4th Hot Dog Eating Contest at Nathan's.

The area has gotten a major facelift in recent years with a new train station, bathing facilities and Keyspan Park.

Access to the beach is free. New York City beaches are open from Memorial Day to Labor Day, 10am-6pm daily. Swimming is prohibited when the beaches are closed.

While there is metered parking available, we recommend taking the train. The B, D, F, N and Q trains will take you there.
