Flight 001
Neighborhood: West Village
Type of Place: Travel
Luggage
Description:
I don’t spend too much time on the road – or in the air – but I have plenty of friends that do. Not only do I adore this store, but I’m sure anyone who spends a lot of time traveling will find this shop both funky and practical.
That the store replicates the inside of a plane makes it even more pleasant to board. The difference between this “plane” and a real one, however, is that instead of seeing the usual sea of black suitcases, bags and laptop cases, you’ll be greeted by a commercial liner full of bright colored suitcases with a retro edge and accessories to match.
Not only are the goods here fun, but functional, too. After all, how many times have you stood alongside other frustrated travelers in Baggage Claim waiting for their luggage appear on that conveyor belt rolling by cases that all look the same? My guess is many. The prices will please you, too, with luggage ranging from about $100 to $300 depending on style and versatility.
Other than candy-colored cases you’ll find all of the necessities for traveling, but with a twist. Check out their line of Spacepak items that can compress up to two weeks of clothing, include compartments for clean and dirty laundry and cost as little as $20! (Larger Spacepaks can run up to $65).
F1 lets you adorn your luggage with fun tags that sport amusing sayings like “Are We There Yet?”, “Get Lost”, and “Getting a Tan” (12 bucks each), stock up on in-flight comforts like eye masks (I had to chuckle at one embroidered with “Keep Nuts Away”). You'll also find Snooze Paks complete with a sleep mask, ear plugs, socks, a neck rest and towelettes, and of course Landing Paks that don’t come stuffed with goods, but feature convenient, zippable pockets making it way easier than sifting through your purse which usually turns into an abysmal mess of jumbled crappola by the end of a flight.
F1 also carries an array of to-go bottles that will ease your anxiety when it comes to bringing essential liquids aboard that fit the TSA's latest criteria (i.e. hairspray, mouthwash, and the like). There are bottle sets for $14, or you can splurge for something like the Fill and Fly set for $28.
Flight 001 makes flying both fun and manageable. And you don’t have to get there three hours early to ensure entry – imagine that! If you’re not in the market for a getaway anyway soon, F1 is a perfect spot for putting together a honeymoon package for the recently-hitched, or any loved one who needs a few essentials for their trip. I promise you’ll deplane this shop with a smile and a craving for that long-awaited R&R you deserve.
