When I first stumbled into this gargantuan shop, I truly thought as though I’d fallen into a rabbit hole lined with more goodies I thought one store could ever carry. Except, instead of falling down the hole, I found myself climbing higher and higher, since the store’s got five stories, each of which is busting at the seams with items in every nook and cranny.
The warehouse-like space looks more like a storage area, and many items have no rhyme or reason to the way in which they are displayed. But that makes it all the more fun to find your way through this mazy bedlam of some of the finest, well-preserved goods you will not find in any other antique shop in the borough.
Prices seem a bit haphazard, too, and can range anywhere from $20 to $30,000, but the versatility of their collection will have you drooling. Look at their stained-glass collection, one of the largest along the entire East Coast. Stained glass windows run from about $300 - $1000, bronze statues $300 - $5000, rocking chairs ( I spotted one by Eames for $650), and a massive selection of industrial-inspired furniture that has been stripped, sanded and lacquered (prices vary upon the piece, but I saw on ultra-cool metal cabinet that appeared to be from around the 1960s for $600).
It’s hard to pinpoint exact prices at Horseman Antiques, since prices are negotiable. More than that, however, prices are not marked on each piece. Instead, every item is tagged with a numbered ticket which you will have to write down and bring downstairs to the man at the desk who will then give you a quote. A lot of consumers, including me, often cringe at the high prices, but most of the items are well-worth it, and remember that negotiability factor, too.
Here are just some of the goods you’ll find hiding somewhere in the labyrinth of Horseman Antiques: furniture including armchairs, armoires, lighting, folk art and other wall décor, sculptures, clocks, luggage, bird cages, urns, toys, mirrors, scientific instruments, and so much more. The diversity alone is enough to rouse your curiosity and have you trying out every armchair, sofa, and ottoman you find here. And if you’re dogs get weary from so much browsing, feel free to take the freight elevator from floor to floor. You will not be disappointed here – but hurry up, as pricey as they may be, the inventory here comes and goes in a flash, so if you’ve got your eye on those 50s style bar stools, snab ‘em right away.
