Neighborhood: East 70s
Type of Place: Thrift Shops

Description:
These are thrift stores with a social conscience – all the profits support New Yorkers living with HIV and AIDS. Need to furnish a new apartment? You’ll find dozens of options here, from furniture to dishware, with new shipments arriving three times a week. There are also great discoveries to be found among the clothes, although, not surprisingly, the selection often mirrors the economics and lifestyles of the neighborhood. In Soho, the Housing Works Used Bookstore and Café offers the collected books from all the stores. The Bookstore is the perfect place to spend a quiet afternoon; climb up the spiral staircase (with a cup of coffee from the café at the back of the store in hand), and you’ll feel a million miles removed from the madness of the city outside. As a final note, remember that you can donate used goods of your own to the shops, or you can donate your time (all stores are staffed by volunteers). – Molly, 2005
