Neighborhood: SoHo
Type of Place: Books

Description:
This is a used book store with a social conscience – all the profits support New Yorkers living with HIV and AIDS. The Housing Works Used Bookstore and Café offers the collected books from all the Housing Works Thrift stores, citywide. Housing Works calls this place Soho's best kept secret, and it might just be -- where better to spend a lazy/rainy/snowy/quiet/whatever kind of day it is than among 45,000 books (without the chaos of The Strand!).The Bookstore is the perfect place to spend a quiet afternoon; climb up the spiral staircase (with a cup of coffee from the café at the back of the store in hand), and you’ll feel a million miles removed from the madness of the city outside. As a final note, remember that you can donate used books of your own to the shops, or you can donate your time (all stores are staffed by volunteers).   - Molly, 2005
