When the air turns cool and the leaves start to fall...sometimes it can seem a little sad *not* to be going back to school. Though the newness could get old fast, there was something special, something hopeful, about a spanking-fresh school year. Last year's less-than-stellar math grade was in the past, as was that year's unfortunate haircut. And hey, maybe that cute guy or girl would be in some of your classes....
If you're missing those simpler days--well, there's no reason why you can't get yourself some new sort-of school supplies. And the ones at Industries Stationery are more stylish and beautiful than anything your mom could have found for you at the drug store.
Elegant and well-designed are the trademarks here. For jotting down notes in meetings (or thoughts in the park), there are spiral notebooks with gorgeous cover patterns ($13.50) and similarly lovely "spiral squares" ($6.50) that will fit in a back pocket.
Speaking of your job, a work diary is $18, and business/calling cards (you didn't get any of *those* in 5th grade!) are available for varying prices. But if you're looking for, say, a card that announces your career as a plumber/accountant/healer, with separate numbers for each and topped with a photo of a kitten, well, look elsewhere; this isn't that kind of place. A note with the business card display explains that cards are often most powerful when they contain the least information (on considering that, I agreed) and encourages buyers to edit the contents way down--just a name, phone number, and email address will suffice. (If you want to remind the recipient of who you are, you can always write something on the back of the card--"Writer from Authors and Agents Conference"; "Plumber/Accountant/Healer"; "Guy you met in bar"...)
If you're ready to look ahead, 2009 caendars are already available, including a handsome desk journal ($14.50); and if you want to go way forward, specially printed legal pads ($12) let you jot notes about events taking place up to December of 2012. For those who prefer timeless to future-oriented, a wall-hanging "forever calendar," indicating only the month and date, is $72--gorgeous, and the only calendar you'll ever need! (Just don't forget to turn the days as you go--you won't necessarily realize if you get off track). For taking your act on the road, there's a tasteful array of satchels and bags, starting at $85.
I discovered Industries as part of last weekend's Open House New York: The architecture firm I was visiting, Roger Hirsch Architects (www.rogerhirsch.com), is based upstairs and designed the store's space. And it shows; as I browsed around and listened to Prince playing on the in-store Ipod, the world seemed for a moment to be a bit more in order, and chicer overall.
