Description:
Kate’s Paperie, a haven of creative supplies, specialty papers, custom invitations, and fancy office items is a prime destination for New York’s bibliophiles, those with an admiration for old-fashioned postal mail, and anyone who wants to get organized in style. Now that the Manhattan and Connecticut stores have consolidated in 2011 into one massive base location in SoHo, the selection is unbeatable. Stop by anytime to contemplate ideas for your next project, but don’t be surprised when you’re heading to the register with a basket of must-have journals, wrapping supplies, handmade papers, and a lovely writing instrument (a great unisex gift).
A colossal assortment of papers, most sold by the sheet, are available and make up a core aspect of the store’s business along with customized invitations, personalized stationary, and luxurious office supplies in cool colors like poppy, tangerine, and lavender. Look for the 2011 line of personal stationary from French designer Christian Lacroix, Kate Spade, and Vera Wang and then mix and match items to form your own unique gift.
Business card holders, luggage tags, passport folios, and other personal accessories are also mainstays. We love the store’s massive selection of gift-wrapping supplies, including hard-to-find Japanese Washi tape in bright colors and stripes. There’s plenty to choose from when wanting to embellish plain paper, too, such as a nice collection of rubber stamps, stickers, scrap-booking supplies, bows, ribbons, and other adornments.
Kate’s Paperie also stocks a large selection of New York inspired gifts that rival the city’s best museum shops. Look for its pop-up skyscraper cards ($8.95), decorative porcelain plates with Manhattan’s grid design ($40), eco-friendly grocery bags in “Manhattan” and “Brooklyn” designs ($18), and a rubber stamp set (perfect for little fingers) that features the Empire State Building and a yellow cab ($6.50). Our absolute favorite is a wooden stationary box laser etched with images of the Brooklyn Bridge ($55).
Parents wishing to engage their children in creative pursuits will find a massive stock of inexpensive craft kits, low-cost decorative materials, art pads, non-toxic paints, and unexpected items like oversized letters made of cardboard that are mass-produced for DIY projects. Any child with a penchant for sticker collecting will be easily captivated. We loved the cute “Stitch It” Kits ($4) as well as the pirate and/or princess “Create-A-Story” Kits ($6.50).
Kate’s Paperie occasionally acquires interesting and unusual home décor, as my recent visit attested. Beautiful Moroccan drinking glasses and tea light candles were featured throughout the store, pairing nicely with the towering display of embossed aluminum storage boxes in an assortment of sizes, also from North Africa. Overall, Kate’s Paperie is a wonderful cache of the useful and unique and a sure-fire hit with parents, teachers, crafters, and anyone who has an amazing sense of personal style - Joann Jovinelly
